Health food coming to north Dayton

The Food Mart at 1413 N. Main St. in Dayton has been selected to participate in the “Good Food Here - Healthy Corner Store” initiative from Public Health - Dayton & Montgomery County.

The convenience store has promised to offer healthier foods, such as fresh fruits and vegetables, low-sodium canned goods, low-fat dairy options, and whole grains to local residents in an effort to transform the neighborhood from an urban food desert, where low-income residents with limited access to public and private transportation find it difficult to buy affordable or good-quality fresh food.

The initiative is being funded by a Communities Preventing Chronic Disease grant.

A kickoff event highlighting the Food Mart’s commitment to offering healthier food choices is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at the store.

The health department will have food demonstrations, offer free taste-testing of fresh produce recipes and provide healthy recipes.
