Livestock manufacturer closure to cost 80 people their jobs

Applegate Livestock Equipment, a manufacturer located just across the Ohio border in Union City, Ind., announced it will permanently close, costing 80 people their jobs.

The plant at 902 Indiana 32 will close sometime between June 14 and June 24, according to a warning notice sent to Indiana officials.

Applegate, opened in 1955, manufactures feeding equipment and fences and gates for livestock, according to its website.

The company became a division of Ag Growth International in January 2008. Applegate relocated from Saratoga, Ind. in the fall of 2008 to its news 160,000 square-foot-facility in Union City, Ind.

The employees, which range from accountants to welders, at the plant were told about the closure on Thursday, according to a notice by general manager Brad Miller.

Several messages were left with Miller by this newspaper for response about the closure.
