Pepsi to shut down production at local plant

PepsiCo Inc. is shutting down production of its beverage canning operations at its Milburn Avenue facility, leading to the layoff of about 30 employees, the company confirmed Thursday.

“We plan to close down production operations at our Dayton beverage facility effective immediately,” the food and beverage company said in a statement emailed to the Dayton Daily News.

“Associated work will move to other facilities within our system,” the company said. “This difficult decision was made with careful consideration and we’re committed to providing support to affected employees by offering outplacement services.

A PepsiCo spokeswoman in New York City said about 200 employees will remain at the 526 Milburn facility, working mainly in warehousing and sales functions.

“A majority of employees will remain at the Dayton facility,” the company added. “PepsiCo continues to be dedicated to serving our customers and consumers in the area, and this change allows us to improve efficiency, fund future investments and be more competitive.”

In 2011, PepsiCo shut down a bottling plant in Baltimore, laying off 75 workers over cost considerations there. A remaining 320 employees were left, also working in warehousing and sales work.

Similarly, the company ended a bottling operation in Fargo, N.D. in 2012, cutting 16 jobs, but leaving intact 302 warehouse and sales jobs.

The Pepsi logo sign at the Milburn facility is easily visible to motorists on Ohio 4.
