He succeeds Jim Hoehn, who was named president of PNC’s Central Pennsylvania region in October.
Melin previously served as city executive and senior vice president of commercial banking for Fifth Third Bank of Western Ohio, which is based in Dayton.
Melin was named Fifth Third’s top executive in Dayton in January 2009. Fifth Third Bank officials could not be reached immediately for comment on Melin’s departure.
Hoehn took charge of National City Bank in Dayton in 2003 and remained with PNC after the companies merged in 2008.
Kelly Wagner Amen, a PNC spokeswoman, said Hoehn will split his time between Dayton and Camp Hill, Penn., until April 30, to help with the transition.
Measured by deposits, PNC is the second largest bank in the Dayton metro area, according to Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. data.
As of June 30, PNC had 36 offices in Dayton’s four-county metro area. PNC in June had $1.7 billion in deposits, about 15.9 percent of the deposits in Greene, Miami, Montgomery and Preble counties. Cincinnati-based Fifth Third, on the other hand, had $2.6 billion in deposits in the Dayton area, about 24.9 percent of the market, according to FDIC data.
