Teamsters postpone strike against Wright State

A union of Wright State University maintenance and transportation workers has agreed to postpone a strike that had been set to start Monday, with the goal of returning to negotiations with university representatives.

Tom Bellew, chief steward for the bargaining unit, said negotiations are as yet unscheduled.

“We contacted the university, and we mutually agreed it was in the best interest,” Bellew said Friday.

In a statement released Friday, the university said: “Our Teamster employees are part of the Wright State family. Their work is invaluable to university operations. We know they are committed to Wright State and the success of our students.”

A mediation session last week between the university and Teamsters Local 957 broke down without resolution — and the union filed Jan. 23 with the State Employment Relations Board a notice that a strike against the university would begin this coming Monday.

If the strike had started, it would have been the second employee strike against Wright State in about a year. The university endured a three-week strike by faculty members early last year, a 20-day walkout thought to be the longest college faculty strike in Ohio history.

Wright State last week said it had given the union “its last, best and final offer of a new contract.” But representatives of the Teamsters still wanted to implement a union-provided health insurance plan for members, an area of disagreement with the university.

The union voted in December to strike if necessary over a string of then-lingering contractual disagreements.
