Trotwood Kmart store to close

More than 70 employees at the Kmart store at 5300 Salem Ave. in Trotwood were notified Thursday that the store will close in late January 2013.

“We made a business decision to close this store based on its performance,” said Chris Brathwaite, a spokesman for Sears Holdings Corp., owner of Kmart and Sears.

The Kmart store in Trotwood opened in 1994.

Employees that are eligible will receive severance and have the opportunity to apply for open positions at area Sears or Kmart stores, Brathwaite said.

Liquidation sales will begin in the coming weeks, he said.

Sears Holdings announced last December that it planned to close 120 stores across the country after a sharp drop in 2011 holiday season sales.

The Kmart store at 2960 Derr Road in Springfield was closed April 8, laying off 52 employees in the process, according to a notice sent to the state.
