Monarch Market to close today at the Dayton Mall

A vintage-inspired boutique marketplace that opened at the Dayton Mall in July 2018 closed Sunday, store owners said.

Located between Chick-fil-A and Bath & Body Works, across from H&M, the 10,000 square-foot Monarch Market gave small retailers a store front to sell their clothing, jewelry, home goods, furniture and more.

About 80 shops opend in the boutique, specializing in vintage, up-cycled, handcrafted and unique finds when it first opened. While Monarch Market was a permanent location, the tenants inside follow a sort of pop-up shop style, offering rotating merchandise that changes regularly.

Pop-up shops have become a popular model in the current retail industry since they don’t have quite the equivalent in online competition as big box stores.

The boutique also held workshops twice a month for customers, teaching the skills needed to make some of the products found within the boutique, such as fabric painting, glass cutting, jewelry making and a Bohemian-style of knotting cord and strings into patterns called macramé.
