Over the last year, your BBB recorded more than five million inquiries (more than any other type of business) and more than 6,400 complaints across North America. Locally, your BBB recorded more than 44,000 inquiries about roofing contractors in 2015.
When searching for a trustworthy roofing contractor, your BBB offers these tips:
• Shop around and compare several roofing contractors. Request bids detailing the work to be done, materials needed, cost and payment terms.
• Don’t settle for the lowest bid.
• Get recommendations from friends and family.
• Ask for references and call them. A reputable roofing company will be happy to provide you with a list of its previous customers.
• Visit home shows. This is a great opportunity for you to meet contractors face-to-face.
• Find out if the roofing contractor is a member of an association like the National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) or the National Association of The Remodeling Industry (NARI). A roofing company belonging to such an organization shows commitment to professionalism.
• Be sure contractors are properly licensed, insured and bonded and determine if they’ll pull required permits.
• Watch out for companies offering quick solutions or using misleading statements, high pressure or scare tactics.
• Pay by check or credit card. Avoid someone only accepting cash.
• Get a written contract detailing the work to be completed. Don’t sign anything until all blanks are completed. Get verbal promises in writing. And, make sure warranties and guarantees are included.
It’s important to be wary of storm chasers. If you believe your roof has storm damage, contact your insurance agent and ask for advice on how to proceed in getting repairs made. It may be best to choose a local contractor with an established business and reputation in the community because any warranty offered is only as good as the longevity and reputation of the company offering it.
Be wary of a contractor asking you to pay for the entire job upfront. A reputable roofing contractor won’t do business that way. However, some roofing contractors may ask for a small percentage upfront to help with the cost of materials.
