Native wild plants such as the purple Monkey Flower, mallard ducks flying out of the grasslands, or the mirror image of trees reflected in shallow blue water are all there for the artist to capture on canvas. Cemex Reserve is a local prairie wetland that has been tapped for Fairborn Art Association’s fifth annual En Plein Air Exhibit. The annual exhibit was established in late 2009 to heighten public awareness of preserving and honoring local nature reserves.
This 164-acre marshland in Greene County was restored in the mid-nineties through a federal grant to Wright State University and the Beaver Creek Wetlands Association. Cemex Reserve is bordered by Ohio 235 to the north, I-675 to the east, and Garland Avenue south. The juror for this year’s show is Kay Koeninger of Yellow Springs. She is a former DVAC director and former art chair at Sinclair Community College who now works as an art history teacher there.
Eligibility requirements to enter: 16 years and older, live within 200 miles of Fairborn. Paintings must have been created outdoors at Cemex Reserve from March 1 to June 28. Oil, acrylic, pastel, watercolor, and paintings with mixed media are acceptable. The entries will be accepted from 1 to 3 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, June 29. A total of $300 in prizes will be awarded at the Opening Reception Sunday, July 6.
This year’s art show is sponsored by the B-W Greenway Community Land Trust and the Fairborn Art Association, with the cooperation of Greene County Parks & Recreation.
The site for last year’s En Plein Air competition was downtown Fairborn.
