Classic Jazz Stompers release 2 CDs

MUSIC

Dave Greer’s Classic Jazz Stompers is committed to keeping the early sounds of jazz alive. Since 1981 the local group has taken its mix of Dixieland, swing and others styles from the early part of the 20th century directly to modern audiences.

The Jazz Stompers continue that tradition with regular performances throughout the region. However, something extra special will occur when the eight-piece ensemble return for its monthly gig at Jay’s Seafood, 225 E. Sixth St., Dayton, at 9 p.m. Friday, March 15. That evening the group is releasing not one but two CDs comprised of new versions of songs from the 1920s and ’30s.

“Four Elements – Eight Jazz Men” focuses on songs about earth, air, fire and water, while the album “Black Beauty and other Beauties” celebrates beautiful women of all colors, shapes, sizes and souls.

The majority of the tracks from both albums were recorded by Chris Hertzler at SoundSpace Studios in Yellow Springs. Other tracks, “Panama” and “Dixie Dawn” from “Four Elements” and “What Are You Waiting For, March?” from “Black Beauty,” were recorded live at the Early Jas Festival in Strongsville, Ohio, in 2010.

The band is Dave Greer (vocals, banjo, tenor guitar), Erik Greiffenhagen (clarinet, soprano and baritone saxophone), Ted des Plantes (piano), Gordon Moore (trombone), Chris Moore (cornet), Greg Dearth (clarinet, tenor and alto saxophone, vocals), John MacQueen (string bass, tuba) and Jim Leslie (drums).

Admission Friday is free. More info: (937) 222-2892, www.jays.com or www.classicjazzstompers.com.
