K99.1FM, Dayton podcast finalists for prestigious Marconi awards

Country music station K99.1FM is again a finalist for a prestigious Marconi radio award — and a Dayton podcast is also a finalist in a new Marconi category this year.

The National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) have announced the finalists for the 2019 NAB Marconi Radio Awards, honoring radio stations and on-air personalities for excellence in broadcasting.

Two Cox Media Group Ohio products are nominees.

K99.1FM has been nominated as Medium Market Station of the Year and is a past winner in this category.

It has always put the community first, and it’s so rewarding to be recognized for that work.”

The 2019 NAB Marconi Radio Awards are recognizing two new award categories this year, including Best Radio Station Podcast.

The “What Had Happened Was Podcast” — which shares the best tales from Dayton, past and present — has been nominated for the new award. The podcast, launched in 2018, is hosted by Dayton.com reporter and award-winning Dayton Daily News columnist Amelia Robinson and is produced by WHIO Radio in partnership with Dayton.com.

Podcast episodes have featured Dayton-raised celebrities Rob Lowe and Alice Ripley, Oscar winner and Wright State graduate Hannah Beachler, Dayton funk legends Lester and Terry Troutman of Zapp, Dayton drag troupe The Rubi Girls and WHIO-TV chief meteorologist McCall Vrydaghs reflecting on the night of the Memorial Day tornadoes.

“Amelia has been a great innovator for Cox Media Group Ohio, so it’s no surprise that her local podcast would be nominated for NAB’s first-ever podcast award. Amelia is an incredibly versatile journalist who’s passionate about the Dayton community and about telling its stories. She’s so deserving of this award,” Collier said.
