X-Fest generates $600,000 in business

DAYTON — X-Fest has become Southwest Ohio’s top rock music festival over the last 15 years, bringing 10 national touring acts and as many as 20,000 fans annually for one day at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds.

In today’s economy, attracting more than 10,000 people for any type of one-day event “is a home run in my book,” said Dan Kemer, vice president of Live Nation Indiana, the concert promotion company that produces X-Fest with Dayton radio station WXEG-FM (103.9).

On Sunday, X-Fest 15 will have an estimated economic impact of about $600,000, including ticket sales, hotels, parking and meals, according to the Dayton/Montgomery County Convention and Visitors Bureau.

“It’s a great event for a diverse population,” said Bev Rose, a bureau spokeswoman.

While some rowdy fans have marred the concert in past years, problems at X-Fest have been “spotty,” said Dayton police Lt. Larry Faulkner. Most involve people getting too drunk or rowdy, he said.

“Really, it’s an individual behavior thing; it’s not a group issue at all,” Faulkner said.

Dayton is one of several Clear Channel Radio markets to host X-Fest events this year, along with Indianapolis, San Diego and Huntington, W. Va.
