Miami Valley Idol return marks reopening of Sorg Opera House

Winner will receive $2,000 and expenses for “American Idol” audition.

MIDDLETOWN— Miami Valley Idol and the Sorg Opera House both resurrect tonight.

The singing competition, with dozens of area talents, returns with two shows. The first will be at 7 p.m. Friday, which also marks the grand reopening of the 120-year-old Opera House on South Main Street. It has been closed since 2010 when a water main break early that year caused severe flooding. Extensive repair work has made the main theater fit for performing again.

The schedule runs as follows. All shows are at 7 p.m.

Friday and Saturday: Contestants perform

June 3: Round 1 eliminations.

June 4, 10: Round 2 performances.

June 11: Round 2 eliminations.

June 17-18: Round 3 performances.

June 24: Round 3 eliminations.

July 8: Round 4 performances.

July 9: Round 4 eliminations.

July 15: Final round.

July 16: Eliminations.

July 23: Grand finale: Performances and eliminations.

Connie Whitt-Craft, who has helped coordinate the contest so far, said, “I’ll be honest, we have some extraordinary talent. A couple of people in there are a little bit off the hook. I’m just glad I’m not a judge.”

Two judges will be present for each show: Terry Monk and Vicki Livingston. A third guest judge also will be at each show, Whitt-Craft said.

The first prize winner receives $2,000 and, if they so desire, expenses paid to try out for “American Idol.” The second place winner receives $1,000, the third place winner $500. The judges’ ruling helps determine the winner, along with an audience vote.

Ticket prices are $15 or $10 general admission, with children 4 to 12 admitted for $5 and children 3 and under admitted free.
