Swearing at Motorists has humble rock ’n’ roll beginnings, originating back to a poster for a fake band that began popping up in record stores and music venues in Dayton 20 years ago.

A few months later frontman Dave Doughman jokingly scrawled the name on a cassette of home recordings that he gave to friends, and the band was born.

The “band” is just two members: Doughman on guitar on vocals and a drummer, now Martin Boeters.

Doughman relocated to Berlin, Germany, in 2005. He will be headed back to Ohio to celebrate the 20th anniversary of his project’s self-titled release and touring for a new album, “While Laughing, the Joker Tells the Truth,” the first Swearing at Motorists full-length since 2006.

Swearing at Motorists will play in Dayton on Friday at Blind Bob’s.

Doughman and Boeters will be hitting the road in March for shows across the country, including shows next week at the Austin, Texas, South by Southwest Festival.

Another Ohio show for the band will be April 1 at MOTR Pub in Cincinnati.

Of the latest album, Doughman says, “I think it’s a really good insight of where I was and what I was dealing with the last eight years. I was distracted. It may sound a bit cliche, but I had to live this record before I could make it. A couple of the songs were written as far back as 2006, and represent how I felt at the beginning of this cycle. As the years passed, my thoughts and experiences became new songs, a musical reflection of my life. There are some very dark moments, some unpleasant realities, but also a bit of hope, as well. The record ends on a positive note, but it’s more realistic than optimistic.”
