Clambake raises $74,000 for Big Brothers/Big Sisters

When The Greene shopping center first came to town, it was announced that The Greene Change for Charity Foundation would be hosting annual events to benefit selected non-profit organizations in our community with all of the funds raised going directly to the charity.

They’ve kept their word and one of the lucky beneficiaries has been Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Greater Miami Valley.

“Their generosity has helped raise more than $300,000 since the Clambake first started in 2008,” says Matt McDowell, director of partnership and fund development for Big Brothers Big Sisters.

More than 350 attended this year’s casual party, held on Saturday night, June 22, at McCormick and Schmick’s restaurant. The event, emceed by Sharon Howard, raised an estimated $74,000.

Recognized during the evening program were pairs of adults and young people known in the organization as “Bigs” and “Littles.” Honored were Mike Brush (Big) and Carlos (Little,) John Moore (Big) and Lorenz (Little) and Meredyth Moore (Big) and Lillie. (Little.)

Patrons danced to the music of Pirates of the Caribooty and dined on culinary treats ranging from Wild Mushroom Bruschetta to Peel & Eat Shrimp, sushi, and Pretzel Encrusted Tilapia.

“The Clambake brings awareness to our pressing need for volunteers to become Big Brothers and Big Sisters for kids in our community,” McDowell said. ” At this moment, we have more than 150 kids waiting for a Big. For only a few hours each month, a caring adult can help a child get on the path to success.”

In 2012, Big Brothers Big Sisters served 462 kids. McDowell said funds raised at the Clambake also will help make it possible for the organization to match more kids in our community with caring adult mentors, “helping us get closer to our goal of serving more than 500 kids this year.”
