John Evans is a thrift store junkie and he’s not afraid to admit it.
The Los Angeles-based comedian — who is performing at Wiley’s Comedy Niteclub Friday and Saturday, Nov. 6-7 — spends a lot of time on the road visiting shops and buying vintage items. Now, he’s making plans to share his knowledge, and some of his purchases, with the public.
“I’m actually considering opening up my own vintage store and online boutique,” Evans said. “The wheels are already in motion. It’ll be great. I can keep doing stand-up and writing scripts and run the store on the side.
“The 40 weeks on the road a year is really wearing thin,” he said. “I love doing stand-up, but to make your living off of doing live shows is excruciating at times.”
That could change. Evans just completed a tour with Bobcat Goldthwait and a portion of it — a 10-day, seven-city run — was filmed for a documentary.
“Bobcat wanted to capture what life was like on the road at that pace, doing almost a different city every night,” Evans said. “He’s a really good filmmaker. I think he’s going to turn that into a nice documentary. That would definitely help my exposure and certainly let people know Bobcat’s still out there doing it.”
Evans, who appeared on “Last Comic Standing” and Comedy Central’s “Live at Gotham,” recently recorded his second CD at Capitol City Comedy Club in Austin, Texas. It will be released by Rooftop Comedy in early 2010.
“I’m really excited because my old CD is very dated,” Evans said. “The new one is a little bit more representative of my style today. I’ve definitely made my act more about myself.
“Some guys do stand-up and they’ve got jokes about The Sham-Wow, women buying tampons at the grocery store or whatever. The more I talk about my own life, the more unique it becomes and the funnier it gets.”
