Package tours have been a staple of the music industry since the 1950s but one of the most enduring of the modern era is the Golden Boys featuring Frankie Avalon, Fabian and Bobby Rydell. The multi-media show, created in 1985 by music producer Dick Fox, pulls into Rose Music Center in Huber Heights on Saturday, Aug. 6.

“It’s amazing we’ve been doing this for around 31 years now,” Avalon told us in a telephone interview. “When we put this together, Dick Fox called the three of us individually and asked us what we thought. We all told him we wanted to think about it. Finally, we all agreed and started to put a show together. It amazes the three of us that we’re still doing it after all these years.”
A performance by the Golden Boys isn’t just a concert but a full show with humor, dancing and video.
“This is not an oldies show,” Avalon said. “These are three individual guys that come from the world of music and film and have been around a long time. We sing together, then we do our individual hits and then we come back together and close out the show as the trio. There’s a lot of reminiscing film of our young days.
“In the 31 years we’ve been doing this show, there has never, ever been a show where people aren’t standing at the end,” Avalon added. “That gives you an indication how much people have enjoyed the show. Being out their live, on stage, and feeling the audience is what keeps me touring.”
Although they had never worked together before the Golden Boys, Avalon, 75, Fabian, 73, and Rydell, 74, all grew up in the same neighborhood in South Philadelphia.
“We’ve known each other a long time,” Avalon said. “We grew up within a matter of a few blocks from each other. I’ve known Bobby since he was about 10 years old. Fab, I met in the neighborhood when he was about 13 of 14. We’re still having a great time working together, but I’m just surprised about the longevity.
“My first hit record happened in 1957,” he added. “That’s almost 60 years, and I still do as many concerts as I want to do. In addition to the Golden Boys, I also do my own stuff individually and so do the other two guys. We enjoy our lives now and we still enjoy doing what we’ve been doing as artists.”
