Downtown business issues warning to ‘parents and prudes’ about weekly event

Think Ol' Dirty Bastard is a good babysitter? Boy, do we have a Dayton brewhouse for you.

No. You'll probably want to keep the kids away from Barrel House, 417 E. Third St in downtown Dayton, on Wednesdays.

A tongue-in-cheek note posted on the business' Facebook page explains the weekly "Wu-Tang Wednesday."

"Dear Parents and Prudes,

We will be playing unedited hip hop all day today for Wu-Tang Wednesday. Due to the nature of the music, there may be language which may offend you or your kids.

Unless of course you take parenting advice from Ol' Dirty Bastard, in which case — WU-TANG IS FOR THE CHILDREN."

The first Wu-Tang Wednesday was held Dec. 13, 2017, and they’ve been held each Wednesday.

The late Ol’ Dirty Bastard was a member of the Wu-Tang Clan, a rap group. His song “Shimmy Shimmy Ya” includes the lyric “yeah baby, I like it raw.”

Gus Stathes, who co-owns the bar with partner Sara Levin, says it is about fun.

“Sara and I have been wanting to do something to liven up Wednesdays around the shop, as they’re a notoriously slow day across the board in the industry,” he  explained in a Facebook message. “We’re hip hop fans, I’m a Wu-Tang fanatic, and ‘Wu-Tang Wednesday’ just rolls off the tongue too well. My buddy Jon Albrecht came up with the “growler growler fills y’all” tag, and thus a weekly event was born.”

He said the tagline is a nod to the Wu-Tang song "C.R.E.A.M.": "Cash rules everything around me, C.R.E.A.M - get the money. Dolla dolla bill y'all."

Details haven't been set in stone, but Stathes said the Barrel House will offer a growler fill special every Wednesday.

“Wu-Tang Wednesday seems to be the tightest fit, though we play all manner of hip-hop, not just the boom bap NYC stuff,” Stathes said.
