He said, she heard: the relationship humor of Sean Morey

Sean Morey isn’t an accredited relationship expert, but the stand-up comedian and songwriter knows something about the topic.

The New Jersey native has been comparing and contrasting the habits of men and women for years, in his comedy routines and with humorous tunes such as “The Man Song,” “The Woman Song” and “He Said, She Heard.”

“Relationships are only the biggest thing in the world,” Morey said. “What else is there that matters? Relationships between the opposite sexes and all the other kinds of relationships — that’s funny.”

Morey, who performs at Wiley’s Comedy Niteclub through Saturday, Oct. 17, appeared on “The Bob & Tom Show” on Wednesday. He enjoys the national exposure the syndicated radio program provides, but says it also motivates him creatively.

“Comedians are sometimes a little lazy because we have no boss. Deadlines are good because they give you discipline. I’m working on a new song about men called, ‘If the Sex is Good.’ We’ll do anything, put up with anything, we’re happy people, if the sex is good. I’m hoping that goes over good.

“People sometimes think it’s all been done, but not if you’re really out there living a life,” he continued. “I don’t know how many relationship songs I’ve written now, but it’s always a challenge to find fresh jokes or a fresh angle on the old jokes. That’s been kind of fun.”

On stage, Morey divides his time equally between comedy songs, prepared jokes and spontaneous material generated from his interaction with the audience.

“I usually do a lot of improv in my show,” he said. “It gives you a feel for the audience instead of just being in your own head. Some comedians look down on that. It’s easier, and a lot of times people do it in lieu of material, but on the other hand, people just love it. And, when it’s done well, it’s magic.”
