“The shows got bigger and bigger,” he continued.
“Our attendance has gone up. We started having sell-out shows in Cincinnati. It’s been really amazing. We’ve got a really devoted, cult-following down there. Now we’re getting ready to do our second show in Dayton.”
Underbelly Comedy returns to Canal Street Tavern on Monday, Aug. 23.
“Basically we’re just bringing the best of the Cincinnati show to Dayton,” he said. “Probably 75 percent of the stuff you’re going to see has already been practiced and tested before so you’re going to get the absolute best show you can.
“There are still raw elements — don’t get me wrong — stuff could go horribly, flamingly wrong,” Cody added.
“I really hope not, but there’s always a chance for disaster. Then again, that’s why the show is so much fun.”
Although mixing so many different comedy styles in one show is unusual, Cody says this approach has served Underbelly well.
“This is something you’re not going to find at many, if any, comedy clubs in the Midwest,” he said.
“It’s got a real underground, rock ’n’ roll sort of vibe to it and that really helps to sell it. A lot of people who don’t even come to comedy clubs come to Underbelly. It makes me feel good that we’re helping expose more people to comedy.”
