Here's a chance to make a difference and get a free donut at the same time.
In connection with National Donut Day on June 7, Bill's Donut Shop in Centerville is giving away a free donut to anyone who comes into the store. As part of the celebration, the shop is collecting items for the Miami Valley Chapter of the Blue Star Mothers of Ohio.
Owner Lisa Tucker says the store has received so much recognition in recent months that they wanted to give back to the community for its continued support. The shop, which has been in business for 50 years, was named one of the top ten donut shops in the nation by Savour Magazine and USA Today ranked the store in the top ten.
It's nice to support businesses that are trying to Make a Difference. Bill's has a long history of helping the community, including collecting food donations for local food pantries and St. Vincent dePaul. For the past 15 years at Christmas, the store has a tree with names of children needing a Christmas gift.
"We work with the Special Wish Foundation throughout the year and granted the very first wish in 1983," says Tucker. "Since that time we have helped grant several other wishes and we will be a sponsor of their golf outing in August."
Two years ago Bill's helped with disaster relief in Joplin, Missouri, and they are currently trying to make arrangements to go to Moore, Oklahoma.
We've written about Blue Star Mothers frequently over the years and the wonderful care packages they regularly send to military men and women around the world. The group also visits veterans in the Miami Valley.
Bill's Donut Shop will be collecting items throughout the month of June and you also can drop off items at the Blue Star Moms headquarters at Town & Country Shopping Center in Kettering.
Here is a list of items that will be most appreciated: sunscreen, lip balm, foot powder, toothbrushes, Q Tips, dental floss, single serving drink mix, hard tack candy, tuna packs in cans with pop tops, individual packages of sweetener/sugar, washcloths, baby wipes, shampoo, Visine, deodorants, toilet paper, stationery and envelopes and sanitary products for women.
Bill's Donut Shop is open 24-hours a day and is located at 268 N. Main Street in Centerville. You don't need to donate items in order to receive the free donut. For more about Blue Star Mothers, go to bluestarmothersdayton.com
