DIY under $10: patriotic wind sock

The Fourth of July is just around the corner, which means it is time to show off your stars and stripes. This week’s do-it-yourself project will only cost you $5.58 to make, and it is a great activity to do with your child.

You will need

Purchased:

Blue acrylic paint — 79 cents at Meijer

White acrylic paint — 79 cents at Meijer

Red crepe paper — $1 at the Dollar Tree

White crepe paper — $1 at the Dollar Tree

Star-shaped sticks — $1 at the Dollar Tree

Red, white and blue ribbon — $1 at the Dollar Tree

Items I already had around the house:

Mod Podge

Foam brush

Scissors

Gorilla Glue or a hot glue gun

Tape

Large, empty tin can

Rubber bands

Directions

1. Clean and dry can, removing all labels or glue from the outside.

2. Paint the outside of the can with the white acrylic paint. Apply two coats.

3. Once dry, apply a coat of Mod Podge and let dry.

4. Add your star stickers randomly around the outside of the can. Make sure to press the corners down.

5. Use your blue acrylic paint and tap the paint onto your surface using your foam brush. This will give it a textured look and make it look more rustic.

6. While your paint dries, cut your rolls of red and white crepe paper into 3-foot strips.

7. Once your paint is dry, carefully remove your star stickers and apply a final coat of Mod Podge.

8. Cut your decorative ribbon long enough to make a handle for your wind sock. Glue the two ends of the ribbon into the bottom of the inside of your can and let dry.

9. Glue the ribbon up the outside sides of the can and place two rubber bands around them to hold it in place. You should have a loop at the top of your can that will act as your handle.

10. Now, use your tape and begin taping one end of each strip of crepe paper to the inside bottom of your can. Alternate between the red and white paper each time.

11. Go fully around your can and before you know it, you will have a wind sock that can decorate your backyard while celebrating your American spirit.
