5 free apps to try on Windows 10

Windows 10 allows you to run a new type of program, called Windows Apps, in addition to traditional desktop applications. They’re designed similar to apps that you find on smartphones and tablets, and are compatible with Windows Phone 10 devices too. In the past, I discussed Windows Apps that come preinstalled with Windows 10. Now I share some apps you can download for free from the Windows Store, which is usually accessible by clicking the Store icon that looks like a shopping bag on the bottom taskbar.

Adobe Photoshop Express

This is a dumbed down version of the popular Photoshop application that lets you make edits and apply effects to photos. You can do cropping, contrast adjustments, apply fixes like red eye removal and noise reduction, and apply different looks like vivid, glow, and dream. When you’re done, you can save or share the edited photo.

Bible

This is the YouVerison Bible app, offering the Bible in many different versions, which you can conveniently compare side-by-side. Some versions even have audio tracks so you can listen in addition to reading. You can also highlight verses, save bookmarks, and subscribe to plans, all of which can be synced between any other devices you have installed the app on.

Fresh Paint

This is basically an improved and more modern version of the Paint application that has come with Windows for many years. It expands with more tools, allowing you to emulate drawing with pens, painting with oils or watercolors, and sketching with pencils. You can even choose between different canvases and papers. It also comes with a few partial drawings that you can try to complete.

Police Radio Scanner 5-0

This provides access to audio feeds from various live radio communications, such as from police, fire, aviation, and HAM radio, from around the World. This is especially useful you’re already a CB, scanner, or amateur radio enthusiast, but could be interesting for others as well. You can browse feeds by geographic location, look through the most popular, or search for particular feeds. You can also save your favorite feeds.

Try Windows 10

The Try Windows 10 app from Microsoft contains videos on how to do certain things with Windows 10. You can choose which type of Windows 10 device you have (PC, tablet, or phone) and select a category of tasks you want to learn more about. The video tutorials are pretty simple, but could be useful to get a basic understanding of certain tasks.

Remember, although Microsoft is still allowing you to download the Windows 10 update free on Windows 7 and 8.1 computers, I suggest a professional like myself do a clean install instead.
