It doesn't have to be a large space, but it does need to be q-u-i-e-t
Even an alcove will suffice for a study just as long as it's tranquil. A comfortable chaise or overstuffed big chair with an ottoman helps create a sitting area and is great for curling up with a good book.
Light it up
Reading requires adequate lighting and is a must, Richardson said. Strong overhead lighting is a possibility, but what's even better is a floor or table lamp.
Consider ditching the big executive desk
While the traditional executive-style desk is not as popular as it once was, today's laptops and tablets go well with smaller, sleeker desks or even tables, she pointed out.
Add touches of personality
Whether it is photos of family members or the beach, décor that resonates with the person using the space make it inviting, Richardson said.
Don't forget the kids
Oversized pillows, rugs, poufs and beanbag chairs are great for child-focused study rooms.
Use your imagination and make the space your own
"Let your study or study space show your personality. This is your getaway, so use your imagination and make it what you want," Richardson said.
