How you can celebrate Juneteenth in Dayton

Today, Americans around the country will celebrate Juneteenth, a holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States.

June 19, 1865, was the date when slavery was officially abolished in Texas, which was the last U.S. state to comply with the 13th Amendment, which officially outlawed slavery when it was passed in 1863.

The holiday gets its name from the combination of June and Nineteenth, and is also known as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, Liberation Day, Emancipation Day, Juneteenth Independence Day and Black Independence Day.
