The quote was attributed to a person who was identified as a “branding expert.” Which is another thing that confuses me, because I always thought branding was something that only happened to cattle on ranches in Texas. But, like “icon,” branding has become among the most ubiquitous words of our generation. Any day now I expect to see someone identified as an iconic brander.
But back to Ms. Kardashian.
I have, I concede, heard the name. And, thanks to the 17 million hits that came up when I Googled it, I now know a little bit about her.
She is, according to Wikipedia, a “celebutant.” Another source declared that she is tied with Snooki at the top of the celebrity loyalty index, which certainly should qualify as enough of an achievement for any human being.
So now I know who she is. But I still don’t know why.
Perhaps my ignorance is gender-based.
Just about every woman I’ve asked was able to spend several mind-numbing minutes talking about her.
But when I mentioned the name Kardashian at the weekly meeting of our Tuesday night physical fitness and beer tasting group, the other guys could only identify it as belonging to one of O.J. Simpson’s attorneys.
Like Paris Hilton and Nicole Ritchie, the origins of Kim Kardashian’s fame seem to be rooted in having a famous daddy. Somehow, though, those apparently provided enough of an excuse to spawn a television series. And, it certainly had to be a lot easier than giving birth to eight babies.
Exactly what goes on during these programs is another mystery to me. The women I’ve asked said they watch it because they get to see what goes on in the Kardashian family.
Which, of course, leads to my final question: Why do they care?
I have, it seems, a lot more questions about Kim Kardashian than I have answers. So if you want to clear them up for me, feel free to send an e-mail. Or, if you don’t have access to a computer, you could send me a letter.
Just address it to my cave in Nepal.
