Miami University CraftSummer workshops will start June 8

Registration has begun for the more than 20 art classes.

OXFORD — Registration is under way for Miami University’s CraftSummer artist workshops.

CraftSummer will be held in the remodeled Art Center at Phillips Hall, located at 420 S. Oak St. It is comprised of a series of hands-on craft and art related workshops taught by local, regional and nationally known artists.

More than 20 workshops will be offered from June 8-July 18, ranging from week-long to weekend-only classes.

The workshops are created for students of all levels and abilities. More than 20 artist-instructors will teach courses focused in the disciplines of ceramics, silk screening, metal work, quilting, beading, digital photography, cooking, drawing, letterpress printing and watercolors.

“CraftSummer workshops provide a unique educational opportunity in today’s increasingly detached, mass-produced world,” said Ron Stevens, CraftSummer director.

“We are constantly hearing from our students how a course has impacted their life — how it has enabled them to accomplish something they weren’t sure they could or how it has provided them with a sense of community they hadn’t found before,” he said.

Among the lineup of instructors are Linda Moorman of Middletown, owner/operator of BeauVerre Riordan Stained Glass Studios, the oldest continually operating stained glass studio in the United States; ceramics artist Terri Kern, who exhibits internationally and has received more than 35 awards for her work; nationally recognized author and artist Pat Nelson, metals/jewelry; and Chris Leeper, Ginger Seiple and Lana Wilson, all of whom are considered innovators.

Weekend sessions are June 8-10 and June 22-24. Week-long sessions (Monday through Friday) are June 11-15, June 18-22, June 25-29 and July 9-13.

CraftSummer workshop costs vary, depending on whether the class selected is for credit or non-credit, number of credit hours, graduate or undergraduate, and Ohio residency status.

A complete CraftSummer course schedule, as well as artist’s biographies and registration information, can be found on the CraftSummer website www.craftsummer.org.

CraftSummer began in 1976, offering 13 workshops in ceramics, metals and fibers.

Through the years, well-established national art professionals, often university professors, have been recruited to teach workshops.
