Trash talk doesn’t belong at track meet

Re “Trotwood misses Roosevelt final,” May 2: I have been at high school track meets since 1946, and never have I seen or heard of the need for “trash talk” at a non-contact sport such as a track meet.

It is the ultimate in horrible sportsmanship to taunt a competitor who is as good as, or better, than you, and even worse if the competitor is not as good as you. Trotwood-Madison Coach Randy Waggoner did the right thing in holding out his team on the second day of the Don Mitchell Roosevelt meet on May 1.

Where did a track participant get the notion that he or she could get away with taunting the competition with trash talk and still be a member of the team?

The coaches should initiate a policy — trash talk equals off the team, scholarship or no scholarship.
