Who has time to waste on closet racists anyway?

Here’s a secret every journalist knows: write about race even vaguely and draw out the bigots.

Sometimes they seethe to the answering machine in the middle of the night. Sometimes they send a nasty e-mail.

This last time, bigotry showed its face in a three-page, single-spaced rant typed on what I’m guessing is a well-preserved word processor.

This particular anonymous bigot carefully detailed the problem with those people — blacks — and how they ruin everything.

Midway through, she did what every delusional hatemonger does — talk about all of her black friends.

It was the old “I can’t be a racist ’cuz I have black friends” defense.

Our nameless racist went to high school and college with blacks and her very best college friend and a “beloved supervisor” were black ... blah, blah, blah.

It was all so unoriginal and so tired.

If only her “friends” knew how much she hated them, they’d un-friend her in a heart beat.

Groups such as the Dayton Dialogue on Race Relations have made great strides in bringing people on both sides of the racial divide together, but this woman and people like her ... why bother?

There is ignorant and then there is IGNORANT.

Ignorant doesn’t know and assumes.

IGNORANT sits alone in the den spewing hate.

Shake your head, but there’s very little you can do about a true racist.

You definitely can’t poke it with a stick and turn it into a poodle.

Tragic as it is, letting a bigot be a bigot is not the worse thing that could happen.

Their reign is nearly over.

Eventually the changing world will leave them behind, miraculously transforming them or they will just go away.

I hope for a transformation, but really either end is an end, so there.

Civilization has come too far to waste precious time on insignificant scaredy cats who wouldn’t know the meaning of friendship if it tried to save them from the darkness.

Fear is a bigot’s only friend and is her constant companion.

“Those” people, whoever they are (the black, the Jews, the gays), are the enemy.

How great would it have been if our anonymous racist really had a black friend or any friend for that matter?

It would have been great, but she doesn’t and it didn’t keep the world from turning.

So to all the bigots, I say keep on keeping on if you really must.

Keep clenching your jaw. Keep smiling with your lips, but hating with your heart. Keep stewing in your own tainted juices.

I’ll keep filing your hate where it belongs — the trash.
