Yellow Springs announced Monday it will cancel its annual New Year’s Eve event due to COVID-19 concerns.

Village manager Josué Salmerón said the village made the decision after seeing record-high numbers of COVID-19 cases on Sunday.

Ohio reported more than 20,900 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday as the Omicron variant of the novel coronavirus continues to spread.

Ohio did not release numbers on Saturday, which was Christmas Day.

Last week, Ohio broke new records for COVID cases on Tuesday with 12,502 cases, Wednesday with 12,864 cases and Thursday with 15,989 cases. Friday’s tally was the second highest ever, with 14,414 cases.

“We’ve been a leader in taking precautions,” Salmerón said of the village, which imposed a mask mandate in August.

The village canceled its New Year’s Eve celebration in 2020 as well. The last year the village held the event was 2019.
