150 Years Of Fire Protection In Sidney Celebrated

Sidney firefighters, current and retired, and their families celebrated the 150th anniversary of the forming of the fire department during a dinner and program Saturday night on the aparatus floor at Fire Station #1.

A large mural depicting the history of the Sidney fire department from 1857 to 2007 was unveiled. It was the art work of John Truesdale, a retired Shawnee Township fireman, who has a son, Jason, on the Sidney Fire Department. The father and son worked together to produce the painting and framing.

In the 150 years, the Sidney Fire Department has grown from a four-man bucket brigade to 37 men and women as firefighter/paramedics. That first year they logged 25 fire calls, to more than 3,500 fire and squad runs projected for 2007.

Sidney Mayor Frank Mariano presented a mayoral proclamation thanking the department for what they do in efforts "to minimize death."
