Appeals Court Upholds Skaggs’ Conviction

Officials said an appeals court has upheld the conviction of an Urbana man who was found guilty of causing a collision that left three college students dead.

Jason Skaggs, 37, was sentenced to 34 years in prison on charges of aggravated vehicular homicide and vehicular assault.

Skaggs’ attorney argued that the conviction should be overturned because of the judge’s instructions to the jury during the criminal trial.

Investigators said Skaggs’ car was traveling nearly 100 mph when it slammed into several other vehicles at a red light.

Three foreign exchange students from China were killed in the collision.
