Deputies arrested Cordell M. Mitchell Jr. Thursday night, and he is being held on weapons charges.
Further investigation will be conducted concerning his possible involvement in a the recent Harrison Township homicide, deputies said.
Sheriff Phil Plummer called Thursday night’s efforts the end of a long and tough investigation.
Social worker Stephen Branham was killed on Sept. 7, 2009, deputies said.
“We brought seven people down to be questioned, and out of that group, only one of them is a person of interest, “said Sheriff Phil Plummer, from the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.
Plummer said the arrest was a pretty crazy scene, and at one point police dispatchers called for all available officers to rush to the scene to help when the called a code 99.
“With all the commotion, the officers couldn’t hear the dispatcher checking, so they dropped a 99 just for officer’s safety,” said Plummer.
The sheriff said no deputies were hurt, and that this was an important case for his office because they wanted to find the person who killed a man who Plummer calls one of the good guys.
Detectives started to interview the person of interest around 9 p.m.
