Auditor: Shelby Housing Employees Abused Phones

Repayment Sought

A state audit of the Shelby County Metropolitan Housing Authority found cell phones had been abused by five employees.

All five have been told to repay the Housing Authority a total of $2,481.

Auditors made the discovery during a regular review of spending by the agency for the period that stretched from January 1, 2007 to December 31, 2007.

The Housing Authority went over its allotted cell phone minutes and that apparently raised a red flag for auditors.

Employees used 17,975 minutes of cell phone time, but auditors found only 4,089 were used on Authority business. The remainder was tracked to personal use by five employees.

In a written statement, State Auditor Mary Taylor said four of the five have agreed to repay the money to the Housing Authority over the next year.

If the fifth employee fails to pay for the personal use of the cell phone, his supervisors at the agency could be held liable for the expense.
