The price tag on a pound of bacon was an average of $6.10 in June, a 14 percent increase from June 2013.
“The price we are paying for bacon has almost doubled in the past two years,” said Elesha Snyder, owner of George’s Family Restaurant on North Dixie Drive in Dayton.
This high price of pork and the rising prices of other foods mean the restaurant will have to pass the cost on to customers, Snyder said.
“We hate to do it because we have the same clientele day in and day out. They know what it’s supposed to cost and then they get a little upset when it’s a little higher,” Snyder said.
George’s Restaurant menu prices were increased 25 cents a year ago, and Snyder said they will again use a formula to calculate which items will cost more.
Most offerings will likely have to be raised again by a quarter, Snyder said.
“Especially when there is meat involved or eggs. Even the coffee is going up like crazy,” Snyder said.
Customer Jerry Lachat of Dayton lamented on a time when he could get a meal of eggs, sausage, and toast for $1, and now its $6 at George’s.
He said he has also noticed his overall grocery bill is getting more expensive, and he has seen the spike in bacon prices.
“I was surprised to hear it was a 30-year high. I knew it had gone up quite a bit,” Lachat said.
