Boy found in creek has been identified

EATON, Preble County — A 2-year-old boy who died Wednesday after he was found in a creek 200 yards from his home had been napping with his parents, woke up before they did and was able to leave the residence without their knowledge, the Preble County Sheriff's Office said.

The child, identified as Christopher Ward, 22-months, was unresponsive when searchers found him at about 2:51 p.m. in the creek that feeds into Lake Lakengren, Sheriff Michael Simpson said. CareFlight was called and the child was taken to Dayton Children's Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival, the sheriff said.

His family discovered Ward missing from the residence, in the 500 block of Skodborg Drive in the gated community of Lakengren, at about 2:20 p.m., Simpson said.

Lakengren security and maintenance personnel, sheriff's deputies and units from the Gasper Twp. Fire & EMS began a search for the child and found him in the creek northwest of the residence, Simpson said.

Ward is the son of a trooper with the Ohio Highway Patrol, the sheriff said.

Deputies are continuing their investigation, he said.
