Bradford Council Delays Vote On Future Of Village Police Department

Bradford Mayor Jeff Wirrig had to bang the gavel several times to get one person at a time to speak, as council, Thursday night, gave second reading to a village ordinance that would abolish the police department.

More than 50 residents jammed the meeting room at the Bradford Fire Department. Most voiced their opposition to doing away with the police department and entering into a contract with the Miami County Sheriff's Department for coverage.

Among those voicing opposition were the police officers themselves, who stand to lose their jobs.

Council is weighing their options with the recent loss of Police Chief Frank Maus to the village of Enon in Clark County.

The village of Bradford could add additional hours of protection while saving the town about $40,000 by contracting with the Sheriff. A vote could come in two weeks at the council's August 23 meeting.

The mayor and five of the six council members indicated support for abolishing the police department, while the sixth member of council told the standing-room-only crowd that he hasn't made up his mind but is leaning in favor of contracting with the sheriff.
