A man and woman knocked out of their lime green kayak this afternoon were rescued from an island in the middle of the Great Miami River in Shelby County.

The incident happened around 1:45 p.m. near the 400 block of Miami River Road about two miles east of Lockington, close to the Miami County line.

The man and woman were not injured, and rescuers called the incident “a non-emergency response.” Once rescue boats were launched, it took a matter of minutes to bring them back to shore. The man and woman were not identified.

Lockington Fire Chief Jon Adams said it is a beautiful day to be on the river, but that boaters must be careful. The water is deep and the current swift, he said.

In addition to the Lockington Fire Department, the Sidney Fire Department’s water rescue team also responded.

Fire officials said those who spot an empty lime green kayak drifting south on the river should not be alarmed.
