LATEST: Police ID motorcyclist killed in collision with car in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD -- UPDATE @ 11:07 p.m.:  The fatality has been identified as James Carmen, 36, of Springfield, according to the Springfield Police Division.

UPDATE @ 5:35 p.m.: The fatal motorcycle-vehicle collision on East Columbia Avenue (U.S. 40) appears to be an accident and police had not begun a criminal investigation, Springfield police Sgt. Jeff Williams said.

It is not clear whether the motorcyclist, whose name has not been released, was wearing a helmet.

“There is a helmet up here, but I can’t confirm if he had it on or not,” Williams said.

Williams was unable to provide the name of the person driving the Chevrolet Impala involved in the accident, which occurred in the area of North Foster Street.

“He is still with us and answering some questions,” Williams said of the driver. “We haven’t seen anything to indicate there was something criminal going on.”

East Columbia (U.S. 40) remains shut down as the Springfield Police Division’s Crash Reconstruction Unit was still on the scene.

FIRST REPORT

A male motorcyclist has been killed in a collision with a car in the area of East Columbia (U.S. 40) and North Foster streets.

The incident was reported just after 4 p.m. The victim ended up underneath the motorcyclist. There is a motorcycle helmet at the scene.

Traffic on East Columbia Street (U.S. 40) has been shut down until further notice.
