Underground electrical vault near Fairfield Commons Mall blows up, causes outages

UPDATE @6:40 a.m. 5/17/18: Power has been completely restored, according to the DP&L outage map.

UPDATE @ 10:30 p.m. 5/16/18: Dayton Power & Light crews are continuing to investigate an underground issue in multiple locations near the Mall at Fairfield Commons, DP&L spokesman Rob Beeler said.

Crews will isolate the issue and restore power as soon as possible, he said.

According to a Beavercreek Twp. fire battalion chief, the explosion in an underground electrical vault sent a manhole cover near Sears flying and filled the parking lot with smoke.

The latest check of DP&L’s online outage map is showing 86 customers without power, down from the earlier report of more than 200 customers in and near the mall reporting outages.

UPDATE @ 9:39 p.m.: 

There is an underground outage at The Mall at Fairfield Commons and DP&L crews are working to “isolate what’s going on,” DP&L spokesman Rob Beeler said.

There more than 200 customers in and near the mall without power at 9:30 p.m., he said.

There are more DP&L crews on the way and the hope is that the issue will be solved soon, he said.

UPDATE @ 9:16 p.m.:

Beavercreek dispatch has confirmed the Mall at Fairfield Commons has now been evacuated due to gas leaks.

Police are asking people to stay away from the area as Vectren and DP&L crews work to fix the issue.

FIRST REPORT:

An underground electrical hazard by a manhole near Sears at The Mall at Fairfield Commons has been reported, Beavercreek city dispatch confirmed.

DP&L has sent crews out to fix the issue; fire crews also on scene.

Fairfield Commons Blvd. is currently blocked off, dispatch confirmed.

A business nearby has reported power outages.
