"I thought he was dead," she said. "When I finally picked him up, he was just limp. He wasn't moving or doing anything, totally limp. He's my life. He's what keeps me alive."
The two dogs attacked Joshua and caused puncture wounds to his chest and arms. While trying to pull the dogs apart, Getz was bitten and bruised. Joshua was taken to the Emergency Medical Hospital in Moraine to receive stitches in his hind left leg. He now has a hard time eating and walking—his right leg is the only thing helping to hold him up.
Dayton police said they are familiar with the dogs, as they have attacked other animals in the past. They did not say if the owner would face charges related to the incident.
The attack to Joshua has cost around $2,000 in doctor bills; he is still bleeding occasionally and has another vet appointment soon.
"Something needs to be done,” Getz said. “This kind of thing shouldn't happen."
