Witnesses revive victim in December crash

OB/GYN recounts night she and a nurse rendered roadside aid

UPDATE @ 10 p.m. (Jan. 8):

A doctor speaks out about the evening late last year she helped save a life on her way home from work.

Shannon McAffee, D.O., who works at Far Hills OB/GYN in Kettering, drove by a serious crash after it just happened around 6:15 p.m. Dec. 30, 3015, on Social Row Road in Washington Twp.

According to police, a 50-year-old man driving without headlights on was trying to pass a car when he nearly struck another car head-on, then lost control of his black Honda Accord and flipped, hitting a guardrail and two trees. He was not wearing his seat belt and was ejected in the crash.

“I deal with emergency situations with moms and babies and I don’t treat trauma or any of that,” McAfee said. “I try to steer clear of that if I can …”

But that was not one of those times.

“This guy was in clear, dire need of immediate assistance.”

When McAfee reached the crash scene and saw the man lying in the roadway, so, too, did a nurse from her office, Kim Job. The two began CPR. While they were taking turns doing chest compressions, the driver stopped breathing, which the doctor said made her “pretty scared, wondering when EMS was going to get there.

“Finally, he started back up with some respiration and then got a pulse back and was breathing more regular,” the doctor said.

Police have since said the victim, identified as Dwight Conley, was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. He was listed in serious condition today at Kettering Medical Center, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

According to statements to police from McAfee and Job, an RN, it wasn’t until they performed about eight or nine cycles of CPR that Conley regained a pulse. A Washington Twp. emergency worker reported he “smelled a strong odor of alcohol” on the victim, according to the crash report.

A black Toyota Corolla and silver BMW, both driven by Centerville residents, also were damaged after they were hit by flying debris from the guardrail and Conley’s car, the crash report stated.

McAfee says she’s no hero. “That’s just the way a lot of doctors and medical professionals are. We’re just trained to do that and to be there and to help.”

UPDATE @ 10:15 p.m. (Dec. 30)

Two medical professionals performed CPR on a 55-year-old man who was ejected in a wrong-way crash this evening on Social Row Road.

When crews arrived, the women, a physician and nurse, were working to save the life of the man who was lying near a guardrail following a single-car crash reported around 6:10 p.m. in the 1000 block of Social Row Road, according to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.

The man, who was not named, was taken by Washington Twp. medics to Kettering Medical Center. His condition was not released.

The motorist was driving a 2000 black Honda sedan west on Social Row Road with his headlights off. He went into the eastbound lane to pass the motorist in front of him, when he swerved to avoid a head-on crash with another sedan. The Honda driver lost control and was ejected after his car struck a tree and went airborne, according to the sheriff’s office.

At the scene, a bag with empty alcoholic beverage containers was found near the car.

The crash remains under investigation.
