Centerville City Council has approved the rezoning of a local church to be used as a new learning center for a Dayton community college.
Far Hills Church on Clyo Road has been rezoned to allow for it to become a new Sinclair Community College location. The college has been seeking to purchase the church and the nearly 40 acres it sits on since July.
Sinclair officials had said they hoped to close on the property by the end of March but due to a 30-day period and a few more things to finalize, the school may not officially close on the property until sometime in April, spokesman Adam Murka told this news organization.
Centerville Deputy Mayor Belinda Kenley tweeted a photo of Sinclair president Steve Johnson speaking to Centerville City Council on Monday evening. Johnson later replied on Twitter by saying “Thank you so much. We will work to make you proud!!!”
“We are excited about the potential to increase our presence in the southern Montgomery corridor,” Murka said on Tuesday. “There’s still some stages to go before the project becomes final but we appreciate the support of centervile City Council.”
In January, the state controlling board approved Sinclair’s request to spend more than $9.6 million on the church.
The church, located at 5800 Clyo Road, is a 100,000-square-foot facility that already has around 20 classrooms already, Sinclair officials have said.
The building, less than a mile from I-675 and near Wilmington Pike, also includes a childcare facility, a coffee shop and cafe area, a kitchen, two gymnasiums and an auditorium that seats 1,500 people, according to documents provided by Sinclair.
The new learning center will likely have most general education classes and possibly other offerings, officials have said.
