Clear skies this weekend to view planets

The weather looks great across the Miami Valley for the holiday weekend.

Since skies will be clear, it is a good chance to try and spot some planets visible in the September sky, Storm Center 7 Meteorologist Kirstie Zontini said.

Saturday night looks to be the best chance to see the waxing crescent moon, Venus and Jupiter line up.

Look for them right after sunset on the western horizon, Zontini said.

They will be low in the sky with the very thin moon on top, followed by Venus and then Jupiter below Venus and to the right.

Try and find an unobstructed view of the western horizon to get the best chance to see these three.

This weekend you also can look to the southwestern sky to find Mars and Saturn. Saturn will be above Mars and although the moon won’t help to guide you, look for two very bright looking “stars” close together low in the southwestern sky.

You’ll know they aren’t stars because they won’t be twinkling.
