Color guard instructor reprimanded for online photos

Miamisburg High School’s Color Guard director has been reprimanded amid world championship competitions in which the school holds multiple titles.

Scott Winters signed a letter of reprimand Tuesday in which he acknowledges posting “questionable” online photos appearing on the same Instagram file as Miamisburg Color Guard students, said district Superintendent David Vail.

The discipline – a “last-chance agreement,” according to the letter – comes as Dayton hosts the Winter Guard International World Championships, a competition that began this past weekend and wraps up this weekend.

Miamisburg won three titles in the international event three times during the 1990s, according to the competition’s website.

“If the advisor commits any future violation of board of education policy, board rules, administrative rules or directives … the board of education shall have the right and just cause to proceed to terminate his employment,” the letter states.

An unspecified number of photos had been posted on Instagram for several days when the district found out about them Friday, Vail said.

“They were brought to our attention and came down immediately,” he said.

Attempts to reach Winters were unsuccessful. Winters was not suspended, but did not attend practices while the investigation ran its course, Vail said.

He is not a full-time employee of the district. Winters has been under supplemental contract with for three years, Vail said.
