County commissioners approve new electric contract

Greene County commissioners have approved a contract that is expected to save the county nearly $400,000 on electric services for county facilities.

FirstEnergy Solutions was selected from an initial pool of six vendors who responded to a request for proposals distributed by Palmer Energy, the county’s energy consultant, on behalf of Greene and eight other counties.

“We’re able to combine our collective buying power with other counties,” said Brandon Huddleson, the Greene County Department of County Services director.

The request for proposals for electric services was issued on behalf of Darke,Greene, Hancock, Logan, Mercer, Miami

Preble, Shelby and Van Wert counties.

Under the new 25-month contract, approved Thursday, the county will pay 4.73 cents per kilowatt hour and is projected to save about $15,905 each month, or $397,625 over the life of the contract..

The county’s annual projected electrical use is 26 million kilowatt hours.

Under the previous 24-month contract with DPL Energy Resources, the county paid 5.45 cents per kilowatt hour, Huddleson said. The current contract ends in April.

“We haven’t seen any substantial fluctuations in usage over the last few years,” Huddleson.

Proposals from DPL Energy Resources, Direct Energy and FirstEnergy Solutions were among the lowest bidders and were considered the most attractive based on pricing and terms, Huddleson said.

Ninety-five meters are located at various county facilities, however Huddleson expects the the Greene County Sanitary Engineering Department, the county’s biggest electricity consumer to benefit most from the lower rate in the new contract. The department, which is funded through user fees, paid $1.4 million last year for electric services.

The sanitary engineering department is expected to save between $125,000 and $150,000 on the new contract, Huddleson said.
