UPDATE @ 6:18 p.m.: Dayton homicide detectives are trying to work up a suspect profile of the assailant who shot a man found in the yard of a home in the 500 block of Brooklyn Avenue.

Dayton Sgt. Creigee Coleman said that according to the preliminary investigation, the black male victim is believed to have been shot at least once in the back yard of a home on Hoover Avenue and then he walked through an alley and collapsed in the front yard of the home on Brooklyn Avenue.

The victim was hit at least once in his lower extremities and is in serious condition, the sergeant said.

Neighborhood residents have told police they heard at least five gunshots, which prompted them to leave their homes. They found the victim and called 9-1-1, Coleman said.

The victim was not able to speak with police or medics and the neighborhood residents didn't see the shooter, so police don't have any idea what led to the shooting, the sergeant said.

"We need the public's assistance with these gun crimes," Coleman said.

If you know anything about what happened or have information you believe can help police, you are asked to call Montgomery County Regional Dispatch at 937-225-HELP, the police department at 937-333-COPS or Miami Valley Crime Stoppers at 937- 222-7867.
