The car, which was westbound on West Hillcrest Avenue, swerved and missed another car, struck the utility pole, flipped and landed a few feet from Fairview Elementary School. The car cut off the bottom portion of the utility pole, but the power lines remained intact.
The trooper quickly went to help the occupants of the car, but no one was in there when he arrived, Robinson said. Officials initially thought the person was ejected during the crash, but they searched the area and didn’t find anyone.
It appears that the driver fled the scene, Robinson said, adding that there’s no indication the car was stolen.
West Hillcrest was shut down as crews cleaned up the scene and repair the utility pole. No power outages were reported in the area.
