Hamilton man admits to stealing hundreds of dollars’ worth of steak

Roger Dale French, 45, of Brough Avenue, was arrested at 1:42 p.m. on Nilles Road after he stole nearly $580 worth of food — mainly steak — and general merchandise from the Fairfield Kroger, 560 Wessel Drive.

According to police, French placed items in Kroger bags and attempted to leave the store without paying. An employee stopped the man after he passed the cash registers, but before he left the store. French “quickly left” and the employee followed.

French was found walking on Nilles Road, not far from Kroger, when a Fairfield police officer responded to the theft.

The Kroger employee told police what happened, and identified French as the man who stole the items. The man first denied he stole anything and “had a bit of an attitude.”

Once in the officer’s cruiser, French “was apologetic and polite,” and at the police station “admitted he stole the food to sell and to eat.”

The merchandise was able to be resold.

French was charged with petty theft, a fourth-degree misdemeanor, but failed to show up for his court appearance on Wednesday. A warrant was issued for his arrest.
