5-hour standoff in Preble County ends in woman’s arrest

EATON, Preble County — A 43-year-old woman with a history of emotional problems held police at bay for about five hours here Thursday, July 30.

Holly Matheny, 43, first threatened to kill her 65-year-old father sometime in the afternoon, police Chief Philip Romeo said.

At 3 p.m., her father alerted police, who visited her house at 310 W. Spring St. with a crisis counselor in tow to try to reason with her, Romeo said.

Matheny, who wouldn’t talk to the counselor, yelled at the visitors and said she had a gun. Police backed away and summoned the Montgomery County Regional SWAT team, Romeo said.

The tactical squad surrounded the house and tried to coax Matheny to come out. Eight neighboring homes were evacuated for the safety of residents, Romeo said.

Matheny declined to come outside for some time, Romeo said, and around 8 p.m., the team fired tear gas canisters into the single-story frame rental house.

Matheny was taken to the Preble County Jail, where she is being evaluated by medical representatives.

No firearm had been found by detectives as of 9:30 p.m., although a search was continuing, Romeo said.

Matheny is being held on suspicion of menacing and domestic violence, Romeo said, and more charges could follow pending a review of the investigation by prosecutors.
